CONTEXT

Encapsulating the breadth of Penn's offerings and resources

The Office of New Student Orientation & Academic Initiatives (NSOAI) offers comprehensive programming that introduces incoming students to Penn's academic and campus life.

As a Communications Intern, I created a comprehensive events calendar to disseminate the numerous resources provided by our office and other university departments.

IMPACT

Effective transitions into the school year

The Office of NSOAI has consistently supported incoming students through its orientation and programming for several years. Here are the key numbers of this internship:

SPECIALIZED INSERTS

Supplementing the calendar, the package also included four inserts tailored to specific student populations, providing a comprehensive guide to the orientation's academic programs, cultural celebrations, and social events that acquaint students with Penn and Philadelphia.

EVENTS CALENDAR

For the internship, I specifically designed the events calendar. Our team inherited this project without a working template or a documented design system, so I reverse-engineered the previous year's calendar PDF pages to build a unified template from scratch.

INSIGHTS

Keeping track of many moving parts

This internship offered insights on communicating with various university departments for the development of these resources. Special thanks to Azzaya, my co-intern, for designing the inserts!

If I were to do this internship again, here's what I would do differently:

SUSTAIN A DESIGN SYSTEM

While I was able to pass down a template for future interns to work with, creating a design system could have helped interns understand why certain design choices existed and given them a solid foundation if they find themselves revamping the design.

DOCUMENT THE WRITING

It was difficult to remember what content changed when working with many versions of the InDesign file, so I would create and utilize a word document to track changes to the copy writing.
